At first it seemed like lightweight, flimsy plastic, and I thought it was going to be yet another gadget in the kitchen utensil graveyard. But low and behold, it really does work like magic!
You basically stab the needle right through the cork (haven’t tried on any plastic corks— I doubt it would penetrate) and push down on the plunger 2, maybe 3 times. It builds up pressure from inside the bottle and “pops” out in one fell swoop. But don’t worry, the cork is securely lodged onto the needle in the clear plastic tube and is not flying off anywhere like a champagne cork.
So from defoiled-bottle to ready-to-pour, it’s by far the fastest, easiest, safest contraption I’ve ever used.
One drawback is it is somewhat challenging to start getting the cork back out of the tube/off the needle for removal; however, once it starts moving, it safely slides right off and the unit is ready to go again. Another small issue is storage. It’s most vulnerable part is basically thin, clear plastic and it doesn’t come with any sturdy storage case. Simply tossing it in a drawer with other kitchen gadgets might eventually crack or break it.
Overall, I love the simplicity and speed the most.
Pros:
1. Affordable compared to fancier contraptions.
2. Very easy to use.
3. Never any messy broken corks or debris in bottle/wine glass.
4. Popping sound signals you and your guests that the wine is ready!
Cons
1. Potential for damage when storing.
2. After opening, slight struggle removing cork from plastic tube.
3. Not as portable as corkscrew.
At first this seemed to work pretty well. A couple of times I'd insert the needle and pump, and I'd hear a hiss, so for some reason air was escaping, but most of the time, 2 or 3 pumps, and the cork would do the magic act of rising out of the bottle. Very cool.
Until it wasn't.
One time I pumped 3 or 4 times...cork didn't move. Tried a few more pumps...could FEEL the resistance inside the bottle, but the cork would not budge. Extracted the needle and used another type of opener. As soon as the cork started to come clear of the bottle, I got a wine shower. The pressure quickly decompressed, and I got sprayed...and my counter and my cabinets, etc. Since that experience, I would hold a towel around the cork when extracting it, but that particular problem never happened again.
but
about a month ago, or maybe 6 or 7 bottles ago, it failed me.
I did the normal needle insert and pump. I would begin to feel a little resistance, but then it didn't keep increasing, and needless to say, the cork wasn't moving. The first time it did it, I had recollections of horror of another wine grenade going off, but nope. Not the case. Used another opener, towel at the ready, but the cork just popped out like normal with the normal opener... Figured it was an anomaly.
Then the 2nd bottle did it,
and the 3rd.
Pump, little bit of pressure, no cork movement.
I thought I'd give the little guy a chance. Each bottle was different. Different vintage, wineyard, type of wine...never know, maybe something funky with the corks since this opener HAD worked for maybe 10 bottles thus far.
4th bottle same
5th bottle did it again
Okay, it wins. It's not going to work for me anymore.
Of course I'm way past the return date, and just so you know, there is NO warranty (not 1 year manufacturing, or even 90 days, or 60 or even 30 days...nothing, nada, zilch), so you get what you get.
The best I can figure, some inner seal has given way, so I can pump to a certain pressure, but then the seal/valve just lets anything above that...what is necessary to get that cork to move...escape out of the bottle, and I'm left with a wicked looking ice pick and cork perforator, but nothing that will do me any good for opening wine.
The first 2 to 3 months, I would have given it a 4 or 5 star review, but now, since it's gone the way of empty bottles, it gets 1. There's just no longevity to this particular opener...so now I'm no the hunt for one that maybe has better reviews and lasts for more than 6 months because when it worked, it was slick.
With the Wine Ziz, my daily life has changed the way I open a bottle of wine. Opening a bottle of wine should be simple. However, I sometimes chip the tip of the bottle using a regular cork opener; I sometimes crack the cork; sometimes the hand lever opener would get stuck. Now, for the Wine Ziz, the instructions is fairly simple, but I didn’t even bother reading it because it just seemed so simple to figure out on my own. I’d say it’s a 5 step process to open a bottle of wine with the Wine Ziz:
1. Use provided foil cutter to expose cork.
2. Insert needle in the middle of the cork.
3. Push down the needle all the way until it stops.
4. Pump 3-5 times until the cork works it way out or you hear it pop.
5. Pop! Poor the wine in your desired drinking object...and enjoy.
There are a couple of things to note:
1. It does feel cheap, but it gets the job done very well. If it last longer than a year, that’s more than enough for me...but if it last a lifetime, than that’s even better off course. I’ve gone through 5 Rabbit hand openers and all of them didn’t last a year. So hopefully the Wine Ziz will last me at least a year.
2. There needs to be a way to protect the needle. Even though there’s a shield, I have a feeling that my clumsiness sometimes might one day accidentally poke the needle.
3. Although not needed, a carrying/storage case would be nice.
